Ethan Summers

For more than thirty years I've worked at the intersection of art, simulation, storytelling, and emerging technology.

My projects have ranged from feature-film visual effects and commercial campaigns to immersive science installations, educational simulations, experimental creative tools, and fine art. Across all of them runs a common thread: developing visual and experiential languages for things that are difficult—or sometimes impossible—to describe through words alone.

I've spent much of my career working at the boundaries between disciplines, drawn to questions that resist neat categorization and often require new ways of seeing before they can be understood. Whether giving form to artificial life, designing interactive environments, visualizing complex systems, or exploring AI-assisted creative workflows, I enjoy creating worlds where people can develop a felt sense for ideas before they have words for them.

Alongside commercial work, I maintain an active studio practice spanning painting, photography, sculpture, generative media, and procedural systems. The studio serves as a laboratory where many of the visual and conceptual threads that later appear in collaborative projects first begin.

Based in the Santa Cruz Mountains with my wife Anne-Marie, two ravens, and a remarkably large house cat.
